| DAVID SARNOFF |
| Continue in this direction along Uncas, which turns into Powhatan Avenue, and bear right. Continue as the road curves to the first intersection. Go left onto the access road. The large mausoleum directly in front of you, situated on a green patch of lawn and surrounded by an access road belongs to David Sarnoff, the Russian immigrant who rose from the ranks of office boy to the chairmanship of RCA. Sarnoff's flrst claim to fame came in April 1912 when, as a wireless operator for the American Marconi Company, he picked up the message that the S.S. Titanic had run into an iceberg and was sinking. For three days, Sarnoff monitored his radio equipment and recorded the names of the survivors. The American Marconi Company was absorbed by RCA in 1919, and in 1921, Sarnoff was named general manager of RCA. During his career at RCA, Sarnoff was instrumental in the founding of its subsidiary, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in 1926. Under his direction in 1939, NBC instituted scheduled television broadcasts, beginning with the opening ceremonies of the World's Fair in New York. Sarnoff served as a communications consultant in World War II, and eventually attained the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army. |
