TOMMY DORSEY
Continue around the circle back to Powhatan Avenue and go left on Powhatan to where it intersects with Cherokee Avenue. Turn right and go about 50 feet to a large, flat memorial on the right with a bas-relief of a trombone marking the place of "The Sentimental Gentleman," Tommy Dorsey. Dorsey, the celebrated band leader and trombonist, along with his brother Jimmy, were leading figures of the "big band" scene during its golden age in the 1930's and 1940's. The Dorsey brothers received their first music lessons from their father as young boys and by their teens were performing in public with their own bands. They played together with their famous Dorsey Brothers Orchestra for many years but split up in 1935 to pursue separate careers. I'm Getting Sentimental Over You, Tommy Dorsey's theme song, along with I'll Never Smile Again and Boogie-Woogie were his biggest hits. His trombone speed and tone were legendary. He died on November 26, 1956. His brother Jimmy died the following year.
