| COLONEL JACOB RUPPERT |
| At the next corner of Powhatan and Cherokee, on your left at the top of a small hill, is the large two-columned mausoleum of another famous baseball man, Colonel Jacob Ruppert. With financing from his family brewing company, Ruppert became owner of the New York Yankees during the golden era of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. It is because of Ruppert that Gehrig missed spring training in 1935. Gehrig was holding out for an annual salary of $40,000, but Ruppert thought the flrst baseman was worth only $39,000. Gehrig eventually accepted Ruppert's offer. |
