Kensico Cemetery is offering a free Tree Pruning and Root Collar Tips Demonstration at the Cemetery on Saturday, April 22 from 9:30AM to 11AM.

Home gardeners, landscapers—anyone responsible for tree care—will learn why pruning is important, when to prune, and how to use pruning tools. Tips will be offered on soil preparation, planting, mulching, watering, and the use of root collars. Participants should bring their questions and wear comfortable shoes for this walk in the Cemetery grounds to the demonstration locations.

The Tree Care Demonstration presenters are Michael Cook, Jr., ISA Certified Arborist and Superintendent, The Kensico Cemetery; and Frank Molina, ISA Certified Arborist and Branch Manager, Davey Tree Experts, Inc.

This educational program is free and is being offered as part of Kensico’s official designation   as an arboretum accredited by ArbNet, but reservations are required by emailing events@kensico.org. Directions and details will be included in the confirmation email.

Coffee and donuts will be available. In the event of rain, the demonstration will be offered the following Saturday, April 29.

In announcing this Tree Care Demonstration, co-presenter Mike Cook, Jr. said, “Trees and shrubs here at Kensico provide habitat and food for wildlife, as well as creating year-round interest with the magnificent flowers in the spring to the plethora of colors in the fall.  So, we spend quite a bit of time caring for one of our largest assets here at Kensico (and over 100 species of trees) with a tree care program that includes pruning and root zone work.  We’ll be sharing important tips on how to prune properly and what it takes to successfully install a new tree or shrub.”

The Kensico Cemetery Arboretum is an accredited Level 1 Arboretum as awarded by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program as well as the Morton Register of Arboreta.
